Snow on the Sahara 1998

The album contains 16 songs which are taken from the French version and re-recorded in English. Lyrics were translated and re-written by songwriter Nikki Matheson. Snow on the Sahara was marketed in 33 countries around the world in 1998. In Japan and Indonesia, the album was released in late 1997 under the title Anggun as a special version.
For some reason, "Memory of Your Shores" is omitted from the US version, although it has been cited as fans' favorite. Anggun also did a cover version of David Bowie's hit, "Life on Mars?", which was also released as a US promotional single.
This album remains Anggun's highest selling album and Anggun also made history as the first Asian artist to enter the Billboard Charts in the United States (Snow on the Sahara went to #23 on the Billboard Heatseekers Charts and the single peaked at #16 on the Adult Contemporary Chart). The album went on to sell 92,000 copies in the United States and has reportedly has sold over 1 million copies around the world, also marking Anggun as the highest selling Asian artist outside Asia.
The single "Snow on the Sahara" also remains Anggun's signature song (for fans outside France, Italy and Indonesia - who are more familiar with "Etre Une Femme/In Your Mind" or "Cesse La Pluie/Saviour"). It is Anggun's highest charting song (#1 in Italy) and was one of the biggest hits in 1997 and 1998. In Indonesia, "Snow on the Sahara" remains Anggun's most played song, even receiving frequent airplay on some radio stations in Indonesia in 2005.
With its enchanting ethnic beats and influences of adult contemporary, pop and rock sounds, Snow on the Sahara has also been described as "one of the greatest albums ever made" by fans, although it was not recognised by the critics. However, Allmusic gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, saying that Anggun "illustrates enough full-formed talent on the disc to make it a promising debut".

Luminescence 2005

Five years after release her second studio album Chrysalis (English) and also Désirs Contraires (French) in 2000, Anggun came back with her third international studio album entitled Luminescence. Signing out from Columbia and Sony Music France in 2003, Anggun worked on new record label with Heben Music, an independent label under Sony BMG France and Universal Music International. The album wasn't also produced by Erick Benzi again. Anggun has been helped by several producers, including Jean-Pierre Taieb and Frederic Jaffre as well as Niels Brinck, the producer of her soundtrack album Open Hearts. Anggun, who composes mainly in English, enlisted the help from several well-known French songwriters, such as Jean Fauque, Lionel Florence, Tété and Evelyn Kral to adapt her English songs into French. Both versions of Luminescence, French and English, shared the same title, a departure from her previous efforts.
Anggun successful comeback began when release her first single "Être une Femme" in late 2004 in France and French-speaking territories. The album featured another hit "Cesse la pluie" in 2005. The English version was released with three hit singles, "Undress Me" (radio only), "In Your Mind" and "Saviour". Her second single "Cesse la pluie"/"Saviour" was chosen as the soundtrack of the box office film, Transporter 2.

Following the success of the album, Anggun re-released the album in 2006 as Luminescence Special Edition both in English and French. She launched the album in August 2006 in France with "Juste avant toi" and abroad with its English-language counterpart "I'll Be Alright". In France, the single went onto chart inside the Top 30. The success of the single was apparently when the finalists of the singing competition television show Star Academy had been called upon to perform a medley of Anggun's hits from this album, including "Être une femme"," "Cesse la pluie" and "Juste avant toi" and the album was relaunched back into the Top 20 itself. As of December 2006, she has lifted another bonus track from the special edition of the record as a fourth single: a solo version of "Garde-moi" (David Hallyday appears on the album version of the track) -- which has been recorded into English as "A Crime." She also recorded another song, "Quelqu'un/Waiting" as a bonus.

Chrysalis 2000

Following the success of her international breakthrough album, Snow on the Sahara, in 1998, Anggun returned to prominence with her second international album entitled Chrysalis. The album was released shortly after its French version, Désirs Contraires. As the title suggests, the album shows Anggun's growth—both personally and musically—as prior to the release of the album, she divorced her husband of seven years, Michel de Gae. The divorce presumably inspired Anggun to write songs like "Still Reminds Me" and "Broken Dream," among others, on the album. The album also marked Anggun's artistic development, as a departure from Snow on the Sahara where she only co-wrote one song, on Chrysalis she co-wrote every song with Erick Benzi with exceptions of "Rain," "Tears of Sorrow," and "Non Angelical," (co-written with Cathy Grier and Erick Benzi) and "Comme un privilege" (co-written with Erick Benzi and Nicolas Mingot). Anggun's songwriting varies from heartbroken ("Still Reminds Me," "Broken Dream"), love-longing ("Breathing," "Signs of Destiny"), humanity ("Tears of Sorrow," "How the World...") even spirituality ("A Prayer") and a fan's obsession ("Want You to Want Me").

The music is also a departure from the highly ethnic-influenced Snow on the Sahara to more Euro-pop/electro sounds. This evident is clear on songs like "Rain", "Signs of Destiny," and "Forbidden Love." Meanwhile, her pop/world trademark can also be found on "How The World...". The album also features some acoustic ballads (accompanied with piano only), in songs like "Want You to Want Me" and "Broken Dream."

Another thing, the album has a lot simpler production compared to Snow on the Sahara, as the sounds are mainly based on synth and computer programming. Only two instruments were used: electric guitar and keyboards. Like her debut album, the music on the English version is the same as the French one, but this time around, the lyrics are different (on Chrysalis, Anggun wrote all the lyrics by herself except for four songs and on Désirs Contraires, Erick Benzi took a sole songwriting part). There are two songs in the French version which are not available on the English version ("Marcher sur la mer" and "Brume"). Instead, they are replaced with two original songs in English ("A Prayer" and "Forbidden Love").

The album has sold 1.2 million copies worldwide, repeating the sales of Snow on the Sahara. However, it was only certified in two countries: Italy (Gold) and Indonesia (3x Platinum). It spawned a hit single "Still Reminds Me" which received heavy airplay in Asia and Europe. The second single, "Chrysalis," did not match the success of the first.

This album is regarded to be Anggun's most personal work to date by fans.
